GIBBERISH ON THE SOUND TRACK

GIBBERISH ON THE SOUND TRACK

and confused thinking on the keyboard
a day of clean white sheets of paper
without any tracks of usable thought
the brain track of thought is distracted
by mis-spelled words and disconnected images
and writing a letter to no one
a midday of laying on your back
reading back issues of the old magazines
that clutter your living space
of other writers who can at least
have written their published stories with
a beginning, middle and an end
and realizing you’ve just pissed away
an hour of your life
on the unwise fictions of other peoples lives
splash cold water on your face
rub yourself on the corner of the door
to cure the ittch in the unreachable middle of your back
and then keep time on the keyboard to the
gibberish on the sound track

OVERDRAWN AT THE WORD BANK

OVERDRAWN AT THE WORD BANK

I’m overdrawn at the word bank

with nothing to write

and no one to thank

the creative juices have drained from the tank

I wasn’t there when the good ship poetry sank

now that’s as far as I can go with that rhyme

and the machine is demanding

 another dime

perhaps another place

another time

I’ll have some other thoughts

that don’t have to rhyme

but for now

I’ll have to walk the plank

because I’m

overdrawn at the word bank

Stagger Lee makes his pitch.

STAGGER LEE

he don’t walk so good

lurching from side to side in the neighborhood

his speech is a bit of a slur

to go with his glassy eyed stare

he flogs reserve cigarettes

to keep body and soul together

but when he talks

he talks sense

and not the usual alkies nonsense

so I have named him

after an old blues song you see

so have a look

at our very own

stagger lee

BRICK EM DANO

BRICK EM DANO

taking the A train

but only in my brain

with all those dead men playing

that scintillating piano

and I’ve found a word

that rhymes with guano

as Johnny Hodges flies

cause the music never dies

breakfast with good friends

laughter all around

and  a friend says he likes

the way I look

something I’ll have to put in my book

and that lonely guitar riff

flexible tuneful and never stiff

sly photos of a person sleeping on the street

rolling stones singing

someone to love

and the tune gets to my feet

and takes up the beat

in the crowds roar

there is a greedy greedy greedy

strident demand

for more more more

so all gather around the piano

and don’t step in the guano

or I’ll yell

before their heads are out of the trough

brick em dano

 AFTERNOON COOL…

AFTERNOON COOL

AFTERNOON COOL

sitting here feeling like a fool

losing the words

after an inspired title

in the afternoon cool

trying not to spill my iced coffee

in the cacophony of earphones

house soundtrack

white noise conversations

and the street

losing it

in the

afternoon cool

OTHER POETS LINES

OTHER POETS LINES

Leonard on the sound track

Joanie in the parking lot

Irving dead and gone

trashed by his kids

Paul in the bubble and going to Graceland

some are taking Berlin

some are living in the canyon

listening for Billy’s marching feet

all echoing in memory

with songs that tug at the heart strings

while my own is out there

without comment or applause

and like my pictures of old blues guys

easily forgotten

and through a Tuesday of anticipation

waiting for a distant Friday

while this blank white page teases me

for more easily forgotten words

fresh from an overnight bed

glad my eyes opened

and found an empty page

and a pen

so at least running ahead of my history

I can start again

and work with magic of the times

reading, listening, remembering

knocking on heavens door

and

other poets lines

TOO DAMN HOT FOR HEADPHONES

TOO DAMN HOT FOR HEADPHONES

WWOZ

that’s zee

not zed

cause zee kinda flys

and zed is kinda dead

turned the sub woofer way way down

the neighbors don’t need to hear or feel  the beat

trying to get some  sleep in this heat

and the carpet muffles

my restless feet

and the relentless funk

has me swaying like a drunk

my rhymes are gonna make for some groans

cause its

too damn hot for headphones
